Personal Work
Welcome!
This is a personal space dedicated to my travel, documentary street photography, and self-portrait work.
Who doesn’t love traveling? What I cherish most about it is not just discovering a new place, but capturing its essence—whether it’s a sweeping natural landscape or the beauty of everyday people. I’m drawn to architectural structures, to people at work, and to those small moments of leisure when life slows down. Maybe that’s why documentary photography feels so natural to me. One of my professors used to say, “Start in your own backyard.” I didn’t begin there in Guatemala, but I love returning home to photograph daily life and the stunning volcanic scenery.
I began taking self-portraits in high school while learning how to use an SLR camera. Maybe it was also fueled by the insecurities of adolescence and the pressure of society’s beauty standards. I wanted to see myself as I truly was. In college, I started to play with the process more, but it wasn’t until late 2009 that I became more intentional, beginning a series of 52 weekly self-portraits.
These days, photographing myself is more difficult. Maybe it’s vanity, or maybe it’s simply that the exterior doesn’t feel as important anymore. I’m not entirely sure—I’m still figuring that out.
